01 / WHY NOW?

October 2026: a turning point for cyber security

The threats have moved on.
Has your protection?

MysonPages

A recent series of serious cyber security incidents has led cyber security experts to dub October 2026 "Black October". AI is helping uncover weaknesses that have been hidden in familiar technology for years - and making it easier to develop ways to exploit them.

For businesses, that means more pressure to identify exposed systems, prioritise updates and spot suspicious activity quickly. Stronger protection, staff who can recognise a convincing scam and clear guidance on safe AI use all have a part to play.

Two recent examples that affect all businesses

21 OCTOBER 2026

Critical PHP security flaw.

PHP is technology that helps websites work behind the scenes, used by around 70% of ALL websites. Researchers using AI found serious weaknesses within PHP that would let criminals take control of the affected websites, giving them access to data and the ability to hold websites to ransom.

Emergency security updates were released, and the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre urged businesses to act quickly. Even if you don’t manage your own website, it’s a reminder to check that your provider keeps it protected.

SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2026

Microsoft’s record security updates.

Microsoft releases regular security updates to fix weaknesses in software used by businesses every day - including the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office suite. September’s updates fixed nearly 1,000 security flaws, and October’s fixed more than 1,400.

That’s over 2,300 in just two months, more than twice the roughly 1,100 fixed in all of 2025. AI is helping cyber security experts find these weaknesses faster, so businesses need the ability to respond to the increased risk.

02 / THE MORNING

What to expect...

In 2024 we invited businesses to our office at Sandbrook House to celebrate 25 years of MysonPages, and since the start of 2026 we've been running small cyber security workshops for our customers to educate them on our latest security offering - Security Xtend. Now, with the context above, the message is more important than ever - it’s time to bring everyone together.

As we'll need a little more space this time, the venue we've chosen is the newly refurbished Ratcliffe Suite at Rochdale AFC (pictured below) which is central, easily accessible and has ample parking available.

Breakfast barms, tea and coffee on arrival.
01

Business' use of technology has changed...

The use of cloud services is now ubiquitous. While this has brought great functionality and flexibility, it has also brought increased risk. See how ongoing monitoring, investigation and response can help connect the warning signs across your systems — and why having someone ready to act 24/7 matters.

02

Getting the basics right

The majority of cyber incidents can be prevented by getting simple protective measures in place. Whether it be enabling MFA on cloud services, regularly patching your devices or backing up critical data, we'll explore how businesses can align with the government's Cyber Essentials framework to create a solid cyber security baseline across their business.

03

Make safe AI use a habit

Understand what staff should share with AI, how to check its answers and where human judgement matters. See how practical training and a clear company policy can turn your business' AI use from a misunderstood and unmanaged risk into a business growth enabler by embedding everyday habits with all staff.

04

Addressing the human risk factor

Phishing emails are responsible for over 80% of all successful cyber breaches/attacks. Explore how regular cyber security awareness training and realistic phishing simulations help staff recognise suspicious messages, better understand their role in preventing a cyber incident and know how and when to report a concern.
